Amit Shah explains proposed increase in LS seats
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: During the discussion on amendment bills related to women's reservation in Lok Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah explained on Thursday that no state will be at a disadvantage due to delimitation. He explained how Lok Sabha seats will increase from 543 to 850.
During the discussion, the Opposition alleged that delimitation would favour northern states while leaving southern states behind, citing differences in population growth over the decades. The Congress further argued that the Bills were not solely aimed at women’s reservation, but were also a way to enable “backdoor delimitation.”
He said, “Let me explain. Suppose there are 100 seats and 33% reservation for women. If the total seats are increased by 50%, it becomes 150. Applying 33% reservation to 150 brings it back roughly to the original proportion of 100 seats.”
He added that the Lok Sabha currently has 543 members. After delimitation, the number of seats is expected to increase by 50%, taking the total to 816. Of these, 33% will be reserved for women. He clarified that 850 is a rounded figure, while the actual number would be 816.
Shah said that the Delimitation Commission's law is entirely based on the existing law. There is no change in it. It will have no impact on the ongoing elections.
The total Lok Sabha seats of the five southern states will increase from 129 to 195. Their percentage will increase from 23.76 to 23.87. Thus, the proposed 50% seat increase will give more seats to every state in South India.
Tamil Nadu will get 20, Kerala will get 10, Telangana will get 9 and Andhra Pradesh will get 13 additional seats. After Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra is the state with the second highest number of MPs in the Lok Sabha, which will get 24 additional seats.
